To Patch or Not To Patch

Eye patching is a well known treatment option for several vision conditions, such as amblyopia and strabismus. Patching can have its benefits, but we know that completely shutting off one eye is not ideal. Although we use eye patching in our Vision Therapy programs, we do not use patching in the way that most individuals would commonly think.

In Vision Therapy the overall goal is to train the brain to use both eyes together. To help accomplish this goal we use a translucent, or fogging patch, instead of the typical black pirate patch. Here are a few reasons why we use a translucent patch:

  • The translucent patch still allows some vision in the covered eye, therefore allowing the brain to maintain attention to both eyes at all times.

  • The translucent patch allows us to build the visual skills in each eye individually which can help the brain use both eyes together more efficiently

  • The translucent patch gives the doctor or therapist a way to monitor the patched eye during eye exercises.
